Dickinson Captures CC Golf Title
Gettysburg's Jeff Forbes Takes Medalist Honors
BERLIN, Md. -- April 21, 1996 -- Dickinson College won its first Centennial Conference golf championship with a 15-stroke victory over Ursinus and Western Maryland.
The Red Devils, which trailed the Bears by one stroke entering the final 18 holes, posted a four-man total of 326 on Sunday to card a 54-hole total of 1,004. Ursinus shot a 342 in the final round for a 1,019, while Western Maryland carded a final-day 326 for a 1,019 score.
Gettysburg's Jeff Forbes went wire-to-wire to win the individual competition. He posted a 75-81=156 on Saturday for a three-stroke advantage over Ursinus' Gary Knittel. Forbes then fired a 78 on Sunday for a 54-hole score of 234, bettering Knittel's 242 by eight strokes. Western Maryland's Mike Diehl finished third with a 246, followed by Ursinus' Mike Spangler with a 248. Rounding out the All-Centennial first team (first five finishers) was Dickinson's Kevin Fruman at 251.
Forbes, who was second last year, became just the third golfer to earn All-Centennial first-team honors two times. Knittel and Diehl moved up from the second team a year ago.
Also scoring for Dickinson was Dave Warnke and Duane D'Orazio who tied for sixth at 252 and Seth Jacobsen who was 12th at 258.
