East Amherst, NY/Canisius DH - Joe Trani, Gettysburg Sr. Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian LANCASTER, Pa. -- May 5, 1997 -- Johns Hopkins, which captured its second title in four years, placed five players on the 1997 All-Centennial Conference baseball team which was announced today. The Blue Jays also swept the individual awards, as senior Dan Raedle (Farmington, ME/Phillips Andover) was named the Conference's Player of the Year, and junior RHP Scott Orlovsky (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) was named the Centennial Pitcher of the Year. Raedle, a unanimous first-team selection at 1B, earned his third first-team All-CC nod. He was fifth in the Conference in hitting (.435 in CC games), second in RBI (23) and first in doubles (9). Raedle, also a first-team choice in 1994 and 1996, is the second JHU player to win Player of the Year honors, following Joe Kail in 1994. Orlovsky was a unanimous choice on the mound, after leading the Conference in wins (6) and finishing fifth in ERA (2.54). Orlovsky becomes the first Hopkins hurler to win Pitcher of the Year honors. Joining Raedle and Orlovsky on the first team is sophomore OF John Christ (East Amherst, NY/Canisius). Other Blue Jays named to the squad were freshman C John Craig (Hammond, IN/Gavit) to the second team and senior 2B Aaron Bernstein (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) received honorable mention. Dickinson's Billy Gills (West Hartford, CT/Wm. H. Hall) is the other first-team pitcher, while Swarthmore's Pat Straub (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) is the first-team backstop. Gills led the Conference with a Centennial-record 1.32 ERA, while Straub was second in the CC in hitting (.475). Muhlenberg 2B Tim Mantz (Newton, NJ/Newton), Dickinson SS Ben Motter (Newville, PA/Big Spring) and Washington 3B Scott Quinn (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) round out the infield. Motter led the Conference in HR (6) and RBI (25), while hitting .435. The first-team OF is led by Gettysburg's Joe Cordova (Haddonfield, NJ/Memorial), who was a unanimous selection after hitting .420. Franklin & Marshall senior Jamie McCall (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), the CC's leading hitter (.507) and base stealer (18), and Haverford's Mark Fine (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque Academy) are the other OFs.
