Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles G - # Andy Taibl, Washington Jr. Fairfax, VA/Robinson LANCASTER, Pa. -- May 6, 1997 -- Washington, which repeated as Conference champions, placed nine players on the 1997 All-Centennial Conference men's lacrosse team which was announced today. Western Maryland senior defender Steve Hallowell (Downingtown, PA/Henderson) was a unanimous selection for first-team defense and was also named the Conference's Player of the Year in balloting by the seven Conference head coaches. Hallowell led the Green Terror (11-2) to a second-place finish in the CC (5-1) and a No. 10 national ranking. The Shoremen, which ran their Centennial win streak to 14 games, finished No. 2 in the national polls with a 12-3 record. Four WC players earned first-team All-Centennial honors - attackman Andy Lopatin (Newark, DE/William Penn), midfielders George Atterbury (Newtown Square, PA/Malvern Prep) and Justin McCarthy (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) and goalkeeper Andy Taibl (Fairfax, VA/Robinson). Lopatin was second in the Conference in scoring with 20-6-26 in CC games, while Taibl led the CC in save percentage (70.1) and goals against average (5.90). Also earning All-Conference recognition for the Shoremen was attacker John Fuller (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin), middie Marc Taylorson (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis), defensive midfielder Jeremy Stoehr (Roslyn, NY/ St. Mary's) and defensemen Scott McGilvray (Huntington, NY/Huntington) and Chris McGlone (Baltimore, MD/Loyola). Gettysburg's Scott Lowery (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) and Western Maryland's Matt Hoppe (Duluth, GA/Wilton, CT) were unanimous first-teamers on attack, joining Lopatin. Hoppe led the Conference in scoring with 14-15-29. Brett Strait (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) and Joe Feldman (Davidsonville, MD/Severn School) of Gettysburg joined Atterbury and McCarthy on the first-team midfield. Franklin & Marshall's Tom Coleman (Upperco, MD/Gilman) was the first-team defensive midfielder. Gettysburg's James Gohng (Lutherville, MD/Towson) and Brian Abbott (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) and F&M's John Greene (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) rounded out the first-team defense. Second Team Pos.
