URSINUS PLACES SIX ON ALL-CENTENNIAL BASEBALL TEAM
Hopkins' Craig and UC's Wiatrak Capture Individual Awards
LANCASTER, Pa. -- May 8, 2000 -- Ursinus, which won its second straight Conference championship with a 16-2 record, placed six players on the 2000 All-Centennial Conference baseball team which was announced today.
Johns Hopkins senior C Johnny Craig (Hammond, IN / Gavit) and Ursinus senior LHP Matt Wiatrak (River Edge, NJ / Bergen Catholic) were named the Conference's Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Craig becomes the fourth straight Blue Jay to win Centennial Player of the Year honors and the third player to earn first-team All-CC honors three or more times. He hit .380 on the season with two home runs, 17 doubles and 42 RBI. Craig also stole three bases and committed just two errors in 197 chances behind the plate. Wiatrak is the third pitcher to earn Pitcher of the Year honors twice. He was 7-2 with a 1.53 ERA, striking out 100 batters in 70 2/3 innings of work. Wiatrak tossed a pair of shutouts and held opposition batters to a .192 batting average.
Joining Wiatrak on the first team for the Bears are senior RHP Kyle Goldwater (Farmingdale, NJ / Freehold Twp.), junior 2B Mike Ottey (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Plymouth Whitemarsh), junior OF Richie Barrett (Buckingham, PA / Central Bucks East) and junior DH Mark Toto (Newtown, PA / Council Rock). Also representing Ursinus on the All-Conference team is sophomore C Ryan Smith (Colora, MD / W. Nottingham Academy) who was a second-team selection. Goldwater is 10-1 with a 1.29 ERA on the season, while Barrett, a first-team All-CC selection in basketball, is hitting .425 with three homers and 20 steals. Toto has a .393 average and 36 RBI, while Ottey is hitting .388.
Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg also placed two players on the first team. The Blue Jays were represented by Craig and junior OF J.R. Taylor (Gainesville, FL / Eastside). Taylor led Hopkins with a .438 average while driving in 32 runs. Junior 1B David Wolf (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Hills) and senior OF Chuck Draper (Trevose, PA / George School) were 'Berg's first-team picks. Wolf led the Mules in average (.391), home runs (5) and was second with 28 RBI. Draper, a repeater on the first team, led the team with 29 RBI and was second with four homers and a .353 average.
Dickinson senior SS Bill Fisher (Katonah, NY / John Jay) was the lone unanimous choice by the coaches. He hit .400 on the season with 10 steals and fashioned a Conference-best 24-game hitting streak during the year. Haverford junior 3B Matt Popowsky (Harrisburg, PA / Susquehanna Twp.) rounds out the elite first team.
