LANCASTER, Pa. -- February 24 -- Johns Hopkins, which won its fourth consecutive West Division title, placed two players on the first team, as the 1997-98 All-Centennial Conference women's basketball team was announced today.Blue Jay senior Angie Arnold (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic), who is ranked in the top 10 of six different Conference statistical categories, was one of the players named to the first unit and was also tabbed as the Conference's Player of the Year in balloting by the 11 head coaches. A 5-6 guard, she averages 15.4 points and 5.1 assists per game, while shooting 34.0 from three-point range and 79.0 percent from the charity stripe. She is the second consecutive Hopkins player to earn Conference MVP honors, following in the footsteps of teammate Julie Anderson (Toronto, Canada/Unionville, PA).
Anderson was also a unanimous selection to the elite quintet and joins Arnold as a three-time first-team All-Centennial selection. She leads the Conference in rebounding (11.8 rpg.) and is third in scoring (17.9 ppg.). Anderson, the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,854 points, is just the eighth player in NCAA Division III history to record over 1,300 rebounds and currently has 1,313.
The other three Centennial playoff teams also placed one representative apiece on the first team. Western Maryland senior forward Katie Haley (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) earned her second first team nod, after averaging 19.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She is shooting 49.5 percent from the floor and recently set WMC records for single-season and career points. Muhlenberg junior guard Sarah Clarke (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) moved up from the 1997 second unit, becoming the first Mule player to earn first-team All-Centennial honors. She averages 9.1 points per game and leads the CC in assists (5.2 apg.), while placing second in three-point field goal percentage (39.6). Ursinus junior forward Kelly McCarthy (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) rounds out the elite five. She came on strong at the end of the season and posted 16.0 points and 6.1 rebound per game numbers. McCarthy is fourth in the Conference in scoring and is third in blocked shots (30).
The Centennial playoffs get underway Wednesday night at two sites. Defending Centennial champ Muhlenberg (15-9) plays host to Western Maryland (16-9) at 6 p.m., while Ursinus (13-11) travels to Johns Hopkins (21-3), also for a 6 p.m. start. The winners will meet Saturday at a campus site to be determined. If Johns Hopkins defeats Ursinus, the title game will be in Baltimore. Otherwise, the championship tilt will be held at the winner of the Western Maryland-Muhlenberg game.

Arnold led the Blue Jays to their fourth straight West Division crown and a berth in the Centennial semifinals opposite Ursinus. She was fifth in the Conference in scoring (15.4 ppg.) and second in assists (5.1 apg.). Arnold also placed in the top 10 in three-point field goal percentage (34.0), three-pointers made (35), free throw percentage (79.0) and steals (2.3 spg.).
A unanimous choice as a first-team All-Centennial guard, she is one of just three players to receive first-team All-Conference honors three times (1996-97-98). Arnold, who is second on the Hopkins' career scoring list with 1,712 points, holds the school record for assists in a career with 551. She is one of just 16 women in NCAA Division III history to amass over 550 career assists.
Arnold follows in the footsteps of teammate Julie Anderson (Toronto, Canada/Unionville, PA) as the Centennial Player of the Year.
