LANCASTER, Pa. -- November 15, 1999 -- Western Maryland, which captured its third straight Centennial championship, placed 13 players on the 1999 All-Centennial Conference Football team which was announced today.

Green Terror senior quarterback Ron Sermarini (Toms River, NJ / Toms River North) and Gettysburg senior full back Paul Smith (Ventnor, NJ / Holy Spirit) were named the Conference's Offensive Players of the Year. Western Maryland senior linebacker Tom Selecky (Claymont, DE / Brandywine) was selected as the Conference's Defensive Player of the Year. The balloting was conducted by the eight head coaches.

Sermarini, a unanimous choice as first-team quarterback, is the Conference's first three-time Offensive Player of the Year. He led the CC in total offense (2,920 yards), while placing second in pass efficiency (152.5) and in rushing yards (851). Sermarini graduates with numerous Centennial career and single-season records, including career total offense (8,627), career TD passes (68) and career rushing yards by a quarterback (1,430). Smith, also a unanimous choice at running back, is the Centennial's second four-time first-team All-Conference selection. He led the CC in rushing (1,546) and scoring (114), while setting an NCAA Division III career record for all-purpose yardage with 9,140 yards. Smith closes his career as the Conference's second-leading all-time rusher (5,205).

Selecky becomes the second Green Terror defensive player to win Player of the Year honors, following in the footsteps of Rick Conner in 1983. A three-time first-team All-CC pick, he led a WMC defense that led the CC in every defensive category - scoring (7.7), rushing (83.3), passing (148.7 yds, 82.5 efficiency) and total defense (232.0). Selecky recorded 59 tackles, including 28 solo stops, with a team-leading 12 tackles for loss.

Western Maryland, which has won 21 straight Conference and 30 consecutive regular-season games, placed seven players on the first team and six on the second unit. Senior DB Marvin Deal (New Carrollton, MD / DuVal) earned his third first-team nod along with Selecky, while sophomore DL Bryan Fogelsonger (Shippesnburg, PA / Shippensburg) and senior DB Anthony Burgos (Wyandanch, NY / Wyandanch) also were named to the defensive first team. Joining Sermarini on the first-team offense were sophomore WR Teron Powell (Milford, DE / Sussex Tech) and senior OL Terry Otto (Baltimore, MD / Patterson). The Terror offensive unit led the Conference in scoring (34.9), while placing second in rushing (221.4) and total offense (434.5).

Johns Hopkins senior OL David Perna (Verona, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) and senior DB Harrison Bernstein (Fairlawn, NJ / Fairlawn) joined an elite group of players who have been named first-team All-Centennial three times. Twenty-four players have been three-time first-team All-Conference honorees since 1983. Other first-team repeaters include Muhlenberg senior WR Kenyamo McFarlane (New York, NY / Proctor Academy, NH), Ursinus senior LB Mike Vecchio (Shillington, PA / Gov. Mifflin) and Franklin & Marshall junior punter Andy Gilburg (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Twp.), who was also a first-team pick at tight end.

Five players were unanimous selections by the coaches - Sermarini, Smith, Perna, Bernstein and Dickinson sophomore DL Kevin Fischer (Far Hills, NJ / Bernardsville).

Also named to the first-team offense were Johns Hopkins senior RB Adam Gentile (Middletown, NJ / South), Dickinson OL Terry Kohler (Glenmoore, PA / Downingtown), Gettysburg OL Bill Beining (Toms River, NJ / South) and Ursinus OL Mike Kochler (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown).

Others named to the first-team defense are Muhlenberg DL David Jones (Bangor, PA / Bangor) and DB Mike Burke (Wanaque, NJ / Lakeland Regional), Ursinus DL Anthony Ciarlello (Havertown, PA / Episcopal Academy) and Franklin & Marshall LB Joe Gillespie (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) and DB Jason Dobry (Pottstown, PA / St. Pius X). Other specialists were Dickinson senior PK Joel Heintzelman (Mountaintop, PA / Crestwood) and Muhlenberg kick returner Joshua Carter (Mt. Vernon, NY / Rye Country Day).

Two Centennial teams were selected to participate in the NCAA playoffs for the first time ever. Western Maryland will entertain Catholic, and Ursinus will travel to Bridgewater (Mass.) State in first-round games Saturday, Nov. 20, beginning at noon.
