WESTERN MARYLAND PLACES 12 ON ALL-CENTENNIAL FOOTBALL TEAM
Carter, Harris, Bartolain Earn Player of the Year Honors

LANCASTER, Pa. -- November 13, 2000 -- Western Maryland, which captured its fourth straight Centennial championship, placed 12 players on the 2000 All-Centennial Conference Football team which was announced today.

Green Terror junior quarterback Jamie "Boo" Harris (Sarasota, FL / Riverview) and Muhlenberg junior wide receiver Joshua Carter (Mt. Vernon, NY / Rye Country Day) were named the Conference's Offensive Players of the Year. Western Maryland senior defensive end Aaron Bartolain (Sarasota, FL / Riverview) was selected as the Conference's Defensive Player of the Year. The balloting was conducted by the eight head coaches.

Harris, also tabbed as the first-team quarterback, stepped into the void left by the graduation of Ron Sermarini, the three-time Offensive Player of the Year, at quarterback for the Terror and WMC never missed a beat. He led the CC in total offense (2,510), was second in the CC in rushing (923) and threw for 1,587 yards and 18 touchdowns. Carter led the Centennial in all-purpose yardage (2,031), topping the Conference in receiving yardage (1,041) and touchdowns (14), while finishing second in in receptions (60). He also led the CC in punt (13.4) and kickoff returns (29.8).

Bartolain becomes the second straight Green Terror defensive player to win Player of the Year honors, following in the footsteps of Tommy Selecky. He was the leader of a WMC defense that led the Conference in scoring defense (13.6) and was second in total (270.1) and rushing defense (65.0). Bartolain had 46 tackles with 12 stops for loss of yardage, including six sacks. It is the first time in Conference history that high school teammates have won both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Western Maryland, which has won 28 straight Conference games, placed seven players on the first team, four on the second unit and one on the honorable mention list. Joining Harris on the offensive side of the ball was sophomore OL John Rydzewski (Gaithersburg, MD / Gaithersburg), the leader of an interior line that enabled the Terror to lead the CC in scoring offense (32.2). Soph LB Matt Wilchinski (Glastonbury, CT / Bridgeton) was a unanimous choice to the first-team defense, as was senior DB Rob McCracken (Westminster, MD / Western Wayne). DB Jason Wingeart (Sparks, MD / Hereford) was also tabbed to the first-team secondary, while senior PK Brent Sandrock (Pittsburgh, PA / South Park) moved up from the 1999 second team.

Franklin & Marshall senior P Andy Gilburg (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Twp.) joined an elite group of players who have been named first-team All-Centennial three times, after finishing second in the CC with a 37.2 yard average. Twenty-five players have been three-time first-team All-Conference honorees since 1983. Gilburg also earned his second first-team selection at TE. Other first-team repeaters include Muhlenberg senior DE David Jones (Bangor, PA / Bangor), senior DB Mike Burke (Wanaque, NJ / Lakeland Regional) and Carter, along with Dickinson junior DE Keith Fischer (Far Hills, NJ / Bernardsville) and Ursinus OL Mike Kochler (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown).

Swarthmore's Ken Clark (Farmington, CT / Taft School) and Johns Hopkins' Scott Martorana (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) join Harris in the first-team backfield, while Hopkins' Zach Baylin (Wilmington, DE / Tatnall School) and Ursinus' Rashard Williams (Atlantic City, NJ / Atlantic City) team up with Carter at wide receiver. Muhlenberg senior John Schoeller (Danbury, NH / Proctor Academy) was a unanimous selection on the OL, while Swarthmore's Mat Rapoza (Kill Devil Hills, NC / Manteo), and Ursinus' Brian McArdle (Levittown, PA / Harry S. Truman) were also named to the first-team line.

Ursinus' Paul Graham (Aldan, PA / Upper Darby) rounds out the defensive line, while Muhlenberg's Doug Folger (Emmaus, PA / Emmaus), Dickinson's Chuck Nesley (Pottstown, PA / Owen J. Roberts) and Ursinus' Joe Conte (Norristown, PA / Kennedy-Kenrick) join Wilchinski on the linebacking corps. Ursinus' Eric Cowie (Atco, NJ /St. Joseph), who led the CC with 11 interceptions, is the fourth member of the first-team secondary.

Three Centennial teams were selected to participate in the postseason for the first time ever. Western Maryland will travel to Emory & Henry for a first-round NCAA playoff game on Saturday at noon. Muhlenberg and Ursinus were tabbed to participate in the ECAC playoffs, taking on Wilkes and King's, respectively.
