    HOPKINS PLACES SIX ON ALL-CENTENNIAL BASEBALL TEAM
    Blue Jays' Christ and Orlovsky Sweep Individual Awards

    LANCASTER, Pa. -- May 4, 1998 -- Johns Hopkins, which captured its second straight title and its third in five years, placed six players on the 1998 All-Centennial Conference baseball team which was announced today.

    The Blue Jays also swept the individual awards, as junior OF John Christ (E. Amherst, NY/Canisius) was named the Conference's Player of the Year, and senior RHP Scott Orlovsky (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) was named the Centennial Pitcher of the Year. Christ set numerous Conference records at the plate, including a .580 batting average, 34 runs scored, 40 hits, nine HR, 42 RBI, 74 total bases and a 1.072 slugging percentage in 18 Centennial games. Orlovsky earned his second consecutive Pitcher of the Year award, after posting a 6-0 CC mark with a Conference record 1.32 earned run average. He shared the Centennial lead in wins, was second in innings (47.2) and third in strikeouts (30). Orlovsky walked just 12 hitters and allowed 35 hits in 47.2 innings of work in CC games. Both Christ and Orlovsky were unanimous first-team All-Centennial selections.

    Joining Christ and Orlovsky on the first team is sophomore C John Craig (Hammond, IN/Gavit) and junior OF Steve Milo (N. Bergen, NJ/Dwight-Englewood). Craig, a unanimous selection, was second in RBI (33), third in hitting (.481) and fourth in slugging (.846). Milo was second in hitting (.540), hits (34), home runs (5), total bases (65) and slugging (1.032), while placing third in RBI (31). Other Blue Jays on the All-CC squad were junior 3B Bill Thompson (Newtown, PA/George School) and senior RHP Todd Flannery (Plainfield, NJ/Scotch Plains) who were second-team selections. Thompson hit .368 and scored 30 runs in CC games, while Flannery posted a 5-0 record with a 3.11 ERA.

    Gettysburg and Ursinus each had a pair of first-teamers. The Bullets placed sophomore 1B John Woods (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and senior OF Darryl Clancy (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) on the elite squad. Clancy was fifth in the CC in hitting (.437) and third in total bases (54), while Woods was seventh in hitting (.429) and sixth in total bases (45). The Bears were represented by junior SS Andy Hawkins (E. Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) and senior 3B Dirk Cleveland (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley). Cleveland was fourth in the CC in hitting (.468) and sixth in RBI (20), while Hawkins was eighth in hitting (.429).

    Haverford senior RHP Jeremy Berman (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) earned a pair of first-team nods on the mound and as a DH. Berman registered a 6-3 mark in CC games with a 1.83 ERA and a conference-leading seven complete games and 50 strikeouts. Franklin & Marshall junior 2B Greg Shambaugh (Lemoyne, PA/Cedar Cliff) rounds out the first team. He hit .397 in CC games with a Conference-record 11 doubles.

    CHRIST NAMED BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
    Junior Becomes 3rd Hopkins Hitter to Win Award

    LANCASTER, Pa. -- May 4, 1998 -- Johns Hopkins junior outfielder John Christ (East Amherst, NY/Canisius), who led the Conference in nearly every offensive category, was named the 1998 Centennial Conference Baseball Player of the Year in balloting by the 10 head coaches.

    Christ led the Blue Jays to their second consecutive Centennial championship and the third in five years. He becomes the third Hopkins player to earn Centennial Player of the Year honors, following in the footsteps of Joe Kail (1994) and Dan Raedle (1997).

    Christ, a unanimous selection as Player of the Year and as a first-team All-CC outfielder, led the Conference in hitting (.580), runs scored (34), hits (40), home runs (9), runs batted in (42), total bases (74) and slugging percentage (1.072) in 18 Centennial games, setting Conference single-season records in each category. He also was fourth in the CC in stolen bases with 11.

    If that was not enough, the right-hander also crafted a 5-0 record on the mound with a 3.76 ERA. He was second in the Conference in mound wins and in strikeouts (32).

    ORLOVSKY NAMED BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE YEAR
    Senior Earns Second Straight Award

    LANCASTER, Pa. -- May 4, 1998 -- Johns Hopkins senior right-hander Scott Orlovsky (Clifton, NJ/Clifton), who led the Conference in victories and ERA, was named the 1998 Centennial Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year in balloting by the 10 head coaches.

    Orlovsky, who was also the 1997 CC Pitcher of the Year, was also a unanimous first-team All-Centennial mound choice. He posted a 6-0 record in conference games with a 1.32 ERA. Orlovsky worked 47.2 innings, allowing 35 hits, walking 12 and fanning 30 batters.

    He set a Centennial career record for victories (16) and suffered just one Conference defeat in his four-year mound career (16-1).

    Orlovsky becomes the second Centennial pitcher to earn two Pitcher of the Year awards. Franklin & Marshall's Tim Sheridan also won a pair in 1995 and 1996.
