1995 Cross CountryLANCASTER, PA -- November 2 -- Haverford men's and women's teams captured the team titles last Saturday at the 1995 Centennial Conference Cross Country Championship hosted by Swarthmore College at Rose Tree Park in Media, PA. The Haverford men placed six runners in the top ten to easily defeat Gettysburg, 23-65, while the women used their depth and experience to edge Gettysburg, 44-48.
In the men's race, Haverford's Karl Paranya led all the way, covering the 8,000 meter course in 26:44, followed by teammate Ntobeko Ntusi, who placed second in 27:22. In the women's race, Meredith Unger breezed to victory in a time of 18:44 over the 5,000-meter layout, thirty-one seconds faster than Western Maryland's Kelly Parrish.
Unger's teammates - Laura Gillim and Rachel Moser took eighth and 10th place, respectively to lead the Fords to the team title. Keely Cheslack-Postova and Carly Friedman finished 11th and 14th to round out Haverford scoring. Gettysburg (48 points), behind the efforts of Darby Kiley, Wendy Johnston and Sarin Wiedle , who finished 5-6-7, took second place, holding off Dickinson (84) and Swarthmore (90). Dickinson's Amy Tretheway finished ninth, while Shoshannah Pearlman placed fourth to lead Swarthmore.
Franklin & Marshall (145), Western Maryland (160), Bryn Mawr (208), Muhlenberg (218) and Ursinus (245) rounded out the team scoring.
Haverford, the only men's cross country champion the Centennial Conference has ever known, won its third title easily. In addition to Paranya's and Ntusi's 1-2 finish, Mark Gyandoh, Chris Hood, Aaron Cooper and Marc Balcer placed 5-7-8-10 for the Fords. Their depth was needed to hold off Gettysburg which had Bill Gray and Kris Weum finish third and sixth, respectively.
Franklin & Marshall was right behind the Bullets, finishing third with an aggregate score of (70). The Diplomats' Luke Kiskaddon finished fourth in 27:34. Swarthmore, led by Kerry Boeye's ninth-place finish, came in fourth in team standings with 105 team points. Dickinson (135), Johns Hopkins (161), Muhlenberg (196) and Ursinus (200) rounded out the team scoring for the men.
The top seven runners in each race received first-team All-Centennial status, while Paranya and Unger were named the Conference's Runners of the Year.
