TRI-CHAMPIONS DOMINATE ALL-CENTENNIAL
FIELD HOCKEY TEAM

Garnet Forward Danielle Duffy "Three-Peats" as Player of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- November 4, 1997 -- Gettysburg, Swarthmore and Washington, which tied for the Conference championship with identical 8-1 records, combined for eight first-team and 17 total spots on the 1997 All-Centennial field hockey team which was announced today.

Swarthmore senior forward Danielle Duffy (Media, PA/Penncrest) was a first-team All-CC choice and was also named the Conference's Player of the Year for the third consecutive year in balloting conducted by the 10 head coaches. Duffy led the CC in scoring with 22 goals and 21 assists for 65 points in all games and 9-9-27 in Centennial contests.

Washington, which was selected for the NCAA Tournament, placed four players on the first team, headed by senior midfielder Sarah Sobon (North East, MD/North East). A unanimous first-team choice, Sobon was named to the first team for the third straight year, after registering 9-8-26 this fall. Junior Mandy Pare (Colora, MD/Perryville) was also a first-team midfield selection, while sophomores Christyl Arrabal (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) and Quincy Miles (Pocomoke City, MD/Pocomoke) were named first-team at forward and back, respectively. Arrabal was the CC's fifth-leading scorer with 12-11-35 and was third in Conference games with 7-4-18.

Joining Duffy on the first unit for Swarthmore was junior midfielder Holly Baker (Media, PA/Penncrest) and senior back Michelle Walsh (Plymouth, NH/Plymouth Regional). Baker was the Conference's second-leading scorer with 15-13-43, while Walsh led a defense that permitted six goals in eight CC games.

Gettysburg senior forward Becky Griffith (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) earned her third first-team All-Centennial honor, after registering 15 goals and five assists for 35 points on the season. Griffith, Sobon and Duffy join Lia Ernst of Swarthmore (1993-94-95) as the only three-time first-team All-Conference honorees in Centennial history.

Rounding out the first team is Johns Hopkins forward Maria Fontoura (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex), Franklin & Marshall back Niki Clawson (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) and Bryn Mawr goalkeeper Emily Kupprion (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven).
