BERLIN, Md. - Western Maryland captured its second Centennial Conference golf championship in three years, winning the title by a single shot in the closest competition in the history of the event. The Green Terror posted a 36-hole team score of 640, besting Ursinus (641) by one shot. Franklin & Marshall was third at 643, while Gettysburg was a shot back at 644. Muhlenberg (648) finished fifth just eight shots off the pace, while Swarthmore (717) and Dickinson (776) rounded out the field. Gettysburg's Mike McLaughlin and Ursinus' Dave Fisher shared medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 153. McLaughlin shared the first-round lead with Ursinus' Rob Bishop after posting a 75 on Friday, but finished with a 78 on Saturday. Fisher was five shots back to start the final round, but closed with a 73 to share the gold medal. Bishop finished a shot back at 154 after carding a final-round 79. Matt Kaufman became the first Swarthmore golfer to earn first-team All-Centennial honors (finish in the top seven) by firing a Conference championship-record 71 for a 156 to finish fourth. The previous low round at Eagle's Landing was a 72 set by Jeff Forbes '97 of Gettysburg and Tony Worm of Western Maryland. F&M's Tucker Hemquist tied for fifth with WMC's Matt Lender at 157. The Terror's John Wheeler rounded out the first team, placing seventh with a 158. Western Maryland also captured the team title in 1998 and finished second a year ago. Bishop became just the second golfer to earn first-team All-Centennial honors (finish in top five) three times with his third-place finish. He also finished second in 1997 and 1999.
