1997 Centennial Conference Championships BERLIN, Md. -- In the most exciting finish in the four-year history of the tournament, Muhlenberg and Ursinus shared the team title at the Centennial championships, edging Western Maryland by a single shot. It is the first CC golf championship for the Mules and the Bears. Gettysburg senior Jeff Forbes repeated as individual champion, after firing a 12-over-par 224 over the par-72 Eagle's Landing layout. He posted rounds of 72-79-73 to defeat Ursinus freshman Rob Bishop by six shots. Forbes set three scoring records in the tournament, firing an opening-round 72 for the lowest score in a round, carding a 151 for the lowest two-round total and the 224 was the lowest 54-hole score. Muhlenberg, which won its first golf championship of any kind with the win, held an 11-shot lead over Western Maryland and a 16-shot bulge over Ursinus entering the final 18 holes, in part to a tournament record-tying 311 in the second round. But Bishop and teammate Mike Spangler carded 74 and 77, respectively, and Tony Santillo of WMC registered a 77 to tighten the team race. In the end, Bryan Mullins' 76 enabled the Mules to gain a tie with the Bears for the championship. The top seven finishers - Forbes, Bishop, Mullins, Ryan Neff (F&M), Gary Knittel (Ursinus), Mike Diehl and Ryan Reid (Western Maryland) - were named first-team All-Conference. Forbes, by virtue of the individual title, was named Player of the Year. Complete results follow:
