Haverford Attackman Brian Bean Named Player of the Year
LANCASTER, Pa. -- May 5, 1998 -- Gettysburg, which won its third Centennial championship in five years, placed eight players on the 1998 All-Centennial Conference men's lacrosse team which was announced today.
Haverford senior attackman Brian Bean (Havre de Grace, MD/Loyola) was a first-team selection on attack and was also named the Conference's Player of the Year in balloting by the seven Conference head coaches. He led the Fords to a 6-8 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the Conference - good for third place. It is the highest finish in the CC in the conference's five-year existence. Bean led the Conference in scoring with 69 points (40 goals, 29 assists) in 12 games and was second with 20-11-31 in Conference games.
The Bullets finished No. 7 in the national polls with a 10-4 record and a 6-0 mark in the conference. Five Gettysburg players earned first-team All-Centennial honors - attackmen Scott Lowery (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) and Jamie Bateman (Parkton, MD/Hereford), midfielder Lee Hemming (Stafford, VA/Episcopal), defenseman Brian Abbott (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) and goalkeeper Andrew Barter (North Brookfield, MA/Tabor Academy). Lowery and Bateman ranked fifth and seventh in the Conference in overall scoring with 30-24-54 and 41-9-50, respectively. Abbott led a Bullet defense which set a Centennial record for fewest goals allowed in six Conference games (27). Barter set a CC single-season record with a 72.7 save percentage in the six Centennial matches and led all CC keepers with a 61.7 overall save percentage.
Also earning All-Conference recognition for the Bullets were attackman Ross Garretson (New Hope, PA/Germantown Academy), midfielder Rob Crowe (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and defenseman Mike McCrain (Holtsville, NY/Sachem).
Joining Hemming at midfield was Western Maryland senior Mike Sargent (Savage, MD/Hammond) and Washington junior Justin McCarthy (Ardmore, PA/Haverford). Sargent led all players in scoring in Conference matches with a 5.50 point per game average and was second in overall scoring with 32-30-62. McCarthy earned his second consecutive first-team nod, while Franklin & Marshall senior Tom Coleman (Upperco, MD/Gilman) garnered his third first-team All-CC nod at defensive midfield. Coleman is the third player in the five-year history of the Conference to receive three first-team selections.
Washington senior Chris McGlone (Baltimore, MD/Loyola) and Franklin & Marshall senior John Greene (Butler, MD/St. Paul's) join Abbott on close defense. McGlone was one of the leaders of a Shoremen defense that permitted just 30 goals in six CC matches, while Greene and his teammates allowed just 9.33 goals in Conference games.
