GETTYSBURG SELECTED AS PRESEASON CENTENNIAL WOMEN'S SOCCER FAVORITE
Bullets Edge Muhlenberg in Balloting by Head Coaches

LANCASTER, Pa. - August 29, 2000 - - Gettysburg, who finished 10-0 in the Conference last season to capture its fourth Centennial title, is the preseason favorite to win the Centennial Conference women's soccer championship.

The Bullets received five out of a possible 11 first-place votes for a total of 94 points to edge Muhlenberg (90) and Johns Hopkins (86), in balloting by the Centennial's 11 head coaches. The Mules received four first-place ballots, while the Blue Jays and Franklin & Marshall each received one top nod.

The Diplomats were fourth in the voting with 67 points, followed by Haverford (60), Western Maryland (56) and Ursinus (50). Dickinson (32), Swarthmore (31), Washington (28) and Bryn Mawr (11) rounded out the balloting.

Gettysburg (12-7-1, 10-0) will look to senior midfielder Whitney Jackson (West Simsbury, CT / Westminster School) - the 1998 Centennial Player of the Year - in its quest for title No. 5. Look for junior middie Emily McAuliffe (Lowville, NY / Lowville Academy) to come into her own this fall, after scoring four goals with four assists last season.

Muhlenberg (14-6-1, 8-2) has the offensive firepower to make a run at its first CC title with the return of first-team All-CC forwards Jen Sands (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) and Nancy Grove (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford). Grove had 12-4-28 a year ago, while Sands added 9-7-25. Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Laurino (Franklin, NJ / Morris Catholic) had the second-best goals against mark in the CC at 0.71 last season.

Johns Hopkins (15-5-2, 8-2) has first-team All-CC defender Rashmi Roy (Dix Hills, NY / Half Hollow Hills) back for her senior season and also welcomes back all-time leading scorer Sarah Parola (Simi Valley, CA / Royal) to the forward line. Parola, a first-team All-CC pick in 1998, had her season cut short by an ACL injury last fall.

Franklin & Marshall (10-8, 6-4) has one of the best young players in the Conference in sophomore midfielder Heather Rice (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel), who earned first-team All-CC honors after registering 14-6-34 last season. Junior forward Allison Hurley (Warwick, RI / Moses Brown School) was a second-team All-CC selection in 1999, while senior midfielder Heather Skillings (Dansville, NY / Mount Ararat, ME) was an honorable mention choice.

Haverford (8-9-1, 5-5) looks to a pair of second-team All-Centennial middies in its quest to return to the championship form of 1995 - Margaret Neri (Williamsville, NY / Williamsville South) and Liz Young (Macungie, PA / Emmaus). Dani Metzger (Morganville, NJ / Rutgers Prep), an honorable mention All-CC pick, heads the forward line.

Western Maryland (11-5, 8-2) nearly captured a share of the Centennial title in the season finale, before falling to Gettysburg, 1-0. The Green Terror must find a replacement for two-time CC Player of the Year Beth Blasi, who had 18-3-39 a year ago. Senior goalkeeper Becca Lyter (Carlisle, PA / Carlisle) had a 1.42 goals against mark and earned second-team All-CC honors. She will head the defense along with senior back Jessie Stickles (Sykesville, MD / Westminster). Ursinus (6-12, 3-7) could be one of the surprise teams in the Conference with the return of second-team All-CC forward Courtney Barth (Oley Valley, PA / Oley Valley), who scored 12 goals last season, and honorable mention back Kelly Meyer (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown). Dickinson (8-11, 3-7) will look to senior forward Gina Guiducci (South Dartmouth, MA / Moses Brown School), who scored 10 times last fall, as the Red Devils attempt to crack the top five. Swarthmore (7-12, 2-8) welcomes back forward Elizabeth Fortier (Portland, OR / St. Mary's Academy) and midfielder Heather Marandola (Madison, ME / Madison), who combined for 19-11-49 a year ago. Washington (4-13, 2-8) has a pair of honorable mention All-CC returnees in forward Niki Dennison (Abingdon, MD / Towson) and goalkeeper Quin Bowman (Chestertown, MD / Caravel Academy, DE). Bryn Mawr (3-17, 0-10) will be led by senior back Liz Brettschneider (Columbia, CT / Windham), who earned honorable mention All-CC honors in 1999.
