Men's Soccer Report - September 28, 1998
FRANKLIN & MARSHALL dropped from the Conference unbeaten ranks with a 3-1 loss at Washington. Sophomore Andrew Traud (Allentown, PA/William Allen) had the lone goal for the Diplomats, while freshman GK Mark Pagano (Medford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) made four saves. F&M is 3-0 when leading at halftime, but 0-5-1 when tied or trailing at intermission. The Diplomats tangle with Muhlenberg (Tues.) and Western Maryland (Sat.) this week.
GETTYSBURG won at Muhlenberg for the first time since 1984 with a 3-0 triumph. In the previous six games at Allentown, the Bullets had been blanked four times and outscored, 12-2. Sophomore F Andrew Addonizio (Cutchogue, NY/Mattituck) opened the scoring with five minutes left in the first half. Junior Jason Vishio (Reading, PA/Exeter) and sophomore M Jeremy Shapiro (Leonia, NJ/Fieldston School, NY) scored two minutes apart early in the second half to put the game away. Vishio had his first career hat trick with a three-goal, one-assist effort vs. Shippensburg. Gettysburg plays host to Haverford on Saturday.
HAVERFORD continued its streak of losing every "odd" game on its schedule with a 2-1 loss to Dickinson. The Fords have dropped games 1-3-5-7-9 this season. Junior Rich Billings (E. Greenwich, RI/E. Greenwich) scored the lone goal against the Devils, boosting his career point total to 101 (45-11). Sophomore F Dave Michel (Philadelphia, PA/Shipley School) notched the team's goal in a 1-1 draw with Moravian, with an assist coming from senior Trip Black (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill School). Senior GK Ben Reeves (Norwich, VT/Hanover, NH) had eight saves vs. Dickinson. Haverford faces Eeastern (Tues.) and Gettysburg (Sat.) this week.
JOHNS HOPKINS pulled out a 5-4 overtime win at Ursinus, giving coach Matt Smith his 79th career win - the most ever by a Hopkins coach. Junior M John Del Monaco (Bethpage, NY/Island Trees) notched the game-winner with just :28 remaining in overtime. The Bears' four goals doubled the amount permitted by the Jays this season. Hopkins entertains St. Mary's (Thurs.) and Muhlenberg (Sat.) this week.
MUHLENBERG suffered a major blow to its hopes of defending its Centennial title when the Mules dropped a 3-0 home decision to Gettysburg. It was the fourth straight loss for the Cardinal and Grey - the longest streak at MC since 1985. Junior GK Travis Wood (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) made four saves for the Mules. Junior D Ron Russo (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to neighboring rival Moravian. The Mules travel to Franklin & Marshall (Tues.) and Johns Hopkins (Sat.) this week.
SWARTHMORE saw its losing streak reach eight with losses to Stevens Tech and Western Maryland. Senior Tirian Mink (Portland, OR/Cleveland) scored the Garnet Tide's lone goal on the week, converting a penalty kick vs. the Green Terror. Swarthmore visits Widener (Tues.) and Dickinson (Sat.) this week.
URSINUS exploded for eight goals in two matches last week. Unfortunately, the defense surrendered 12 in two losses. UC spotted Eastern a 4-0 lead before battling back to tie the game. Senior Mike Traud (Allentown, PA/William Allen) scored twice in the rally, which was not enough in a 7-4 loss. Senior Tom Regan (Drexel Hill, PA/St. Joseph's Prep) gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at Johns Hopkins, but Ursinus needed a tally from freshman Mike Drinker (Perkasie, PA/Lansdale Catholic) to tie the game at 4-4 and force overtime. But a Blue Jay goal with 28 seconds left in OT was the difference. Ursinus travels to Washington on Saturday.
WASHINGTON improved its Conference mark to 1-1 with a 3-1 win over Franklin & Marshall. Senior Dan Gerbasi (Edgewater, MD), junior F John Jenkins (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) and sophomore F Justin Daniel (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) each scored goals in the win.
