Bullet Sophomore Whitney Jackson Named Player of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- November 3, 1998 -- Gettysburg, which won its third Conference championship with a 9-0 mark, placed seven players on the 1998 All-Centennial Conference women's soccer team which was announced today.

Gettysburg sophomore midfielder Whitney Jackson (West Simsbury, CT/Westminster School) was a first-team choice and also named the Conference's Player of the Year in balloting conducted by the conference's 10 head coaches. Jackson was the team's second-leading scorer with six goals and four assists for 16 points. She led the Bullets to a 14-3-1 overall record and a berth opposite Richard Stockton in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

In addition to Jackson, the Bullets also placed junior back Lauren Frankford (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) on the first unit. Junior forward Patsy Cors (Boonton, NJ/Mountain Lakes), senior midfielder Amy Brewster (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) and senior goalkeeper Beth O'Boyle (Rockville, MD/Holy Cross Academy) were second-team All-Centennial selections, while sophomore forward Rachel Rzemieniewski (Neshanic, NJ/Immaculata) and junior midfielder Maureen McBrien (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) were honorable mention choices.

Muhlenberg senior Celina Boer (Louisville, KY/Upper Dublin, PA) became the third player in Conference history to earn first-team All-Centennial honors three times. She led the Conference in scoring with 17-4-41 and has a school record 101 career points. Rounding out the forwards is Franklin & Marshall junior Sarah Preiss (Port Murray, NJ/West Morris Central), who was third in scoring in the Conference with 12-9-33.

Joining Jackson on the midfield is Johns Hopkins junior Hartaj Gill (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), Franklin & Marshall senior Melissa Coroso (West Hartford, CT/William Hall) and Western Maryland junior Beth Blasi (Columbia, MD/Fallston). Gill was a stalwart on defense, as the Blue Jays allowed a Conference-low five goals in CC games. Coroso, who was also a first-team choice in 1996, scored 13-2-28 on the season, while Blasi, the 1997 CC Player of the Year, earned her second first-team nod after scoring 9-5-23.

Johns Hopkins junior Kathleen Hanlon (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) earned her second first-team All-Centennial nod as a back and was joined on the first unit by sophomore Rashmi Roy (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills). Bryn Mawr senior Angela Hadwin (Lexington, MA/Lexington) was named the first-team goalkeeper. She stopped a Conference-high 326 shots on the season, posting an 82.7 save percentage.
