JOHNS HOPKINS PLACES SIX ON ALL-CENTENNIAL
WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM
Hopkins' Sarah Parola and WMC's Beth Blasi Named Co-Players of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- November 4, 1997 -- Johns Hopkins, which won its second consecutive Conference championship with an 8-1 mark, placed six players on the 1997 All-Centennial Conference women's soccer team which was announced today.

Johns Hopkins freshman forward Sarah Parola (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) and Western Maryland sophomore midfielder Beth Blasi (Columbia, MD/Fallston) were first-team choices and also named the Conference co-Players of the Year in balloting conducted by the conference's 10 head coaches. Parola led the Conference in scoring in Centennial games (14-3-31) and overall (20-9-49). Blasi was second in Conference scoring (9-6-24) and third in overall scoring (13-6-32).

In addition to Parola, the Blue Jays also placed senior back Becki Shapack (Tewksbury, NJ/Voorhees) and sophomore back Kathleen Hanlon (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) on the first unit. Sophomore Hartaj Gill (E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) was a second-team All-Conference selection at midfield, while freshman forward Courtney Walker (Reisterstown, MD/Notre Dame Prep) and sophomore goalkeeper Kate Cushman (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) were honorable mention choices.

Western Maryland grad student Erin Murphey (Linwood, MD/Francis Scott Key) became just the second player in Conference history to earn first-team All-Conference honors three times. A forward, she had 11-3-25 on the season. Muhlenberg junior Celina Boer (Maple Glen, PA/Upper Dublin), who had 14-3-31 on the season, joined Parola and Murphey on the first-team frontline. It is Boer's second time on the first unit, as she received first-team laurels last season at midfield.

Haverford senior Amanda Salter (Corona del Mar, CA/Cate School) and Gettysburg junior Amy Brewster (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) teamed up with Blasi on the first-team midfield. Salter, an honorable mention All-CC selection last fall, had 12-6-30 in all games, while Brewster had 11-9-31 overall.

Shapack, a repeat first-teamer, leads the All-Centennial defense, while Hanlon moved up from the '96 second unit. Gettysburg senior Chrissy Doyle (Summit, NJ/New Providence) and sophomore Lauren Frankford (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) earned their first All-CC first-team recognition, while Muhlenberg senior Laurie Kennedy (East Windsor, NJ/Notre Dame) rounded out the unit.

Gettysburg senior Beth O'Boyle (Rockville, MD/Holy Cross Academy) rounds out the elite squad at goalkeeper. She was third in the Conference in save percentage (81.9) and goals against average (1.20) this season.
