Swarthmore's Mullarkey Receives Rhodes Scholarship
(November 23) - Swarthmore senior Caitlin Mullarkey became just the
second Centennial Conference athlete to
earn a prestigious Rhodes
Scholarship as the scholarship trust announced its 32 recipients
Saturday. The students will enter Oxford University in England next
October. The scholarships provide two or three years of study.
Mullarkey, a third-team Academic All-America selection, recently became
the first defender to earn All-Centennial first-team women's soccer
honors four times. A two-time All-Region selection, she was the leader
of the Garnet defense that was second in goals allowed (12) in 2008. An
honors biology major, is active on the Student Activities Advisory Board
and conducts cell biology research on campus. A McCabe Scholarship
recipient upon admission to Swarthmore, she is a candidate for the
Marshall Scholarship for post-graduate work, having spent
last summer at Georgetown Medical School researching malignant glioma, a
type of brain cancer discovered in the diagnosis of Senator Ted Kennedy.
Johns Hopkins football player Wes Moore '01 was the
Conference's first Rhodes Scholar back in
2000.
