Susquehanna Sets Program Record Score at William Smith

A historic opening round of play by the Susquehanna women's golf team saw the Crusaders enter Sunday in first place at the William Smith Invitational, but they were edged out for the title by host William Smith and Le Moyne as SU placed third overall.

This was the team's first competition of the fall as rain postponed or cancelled their previous two scheduled meets.

SU finished Sunday with a team score of 404 for a two-day score of 787. William Smith posted a team score of 784 while Le Moyne was just one stroke off the lead (785). Elmira and Nazareth rounded out the field.

The tournament was held at Clifton Springs Country Club and was a par 72 course (6097 yards).

Saturday was a historic day for the Crusaders as they had school team record score of 383, the first time the program has had a team score below 400. That was thanks in part to four players who shot under 100 for the day: Lindsey Kass (Chester, N.J.) (91), Alissa Perez (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) (86), Lauren Fitzgerald (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) (97) and Maura Handte (Boalsburg, Pa./State College) (99).

Individually, Kass (pictured) put together an impressive rookie debut, placing fifth overall with a two-day score of 188 (91, 97) and was Susquehanna's top finisher. Other top-20 finishers were Perez (196), Fitzgerald (199) and Handte (204).
