Fords Sink Shorewomen to Advance to Semifinals
Caitlin Gallagher, Haverford
Haverford 5, Washington College 1
The Haverford College women's tennis team moves onto the Centennial Conference semifinals after registering a convincing 5-1 victory over visiting Washington College in first-round playoff action on Wednesday afternoon at Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts.
The fourth-seeded Fords (12-8) took control of the contest from the outset with wins in all three matches during doubles play. Kristen Andersen and Rachal Torg at No. 3 doubles tallied an 8-1 victory for the first Haverford point of the day. Playing at No. 2 doubles, Kate Donches and Abbey Flynn blanked Campbell McNicol and Kat Cohen of fifth-seeded Washington (10-8) for point number two followed by Alex Ferrara and Caitlin Gallagher's 8-1 conquest at No. 1 doubles to complete the sweep.
Needing just two points for the win entering singles action, the Fords quickly delivered. Registering her tenth-straight singles victory, Gallagher, at No. 2, dropped just two games in a straight-set victory over McNicol, while Andersen followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kelsey Mills at No. 6.
Donches at No. 3, Jordana Bloom at No. 5, and Flynn at No. 6 did not complete their matches once Haverford clinched the first Centennial playoff victory in program history.
The Fords, ranked 20th in the Atlantic South region, head to Johns Hopkins University on Saturday to take on the top-seeded Blue Jays in semifinal action at 11 a.m. Johns Hopkins, currently ranked eighth in Division III, accounted for one of Haverford's three conference losses this season with an 8-1 victory on March 17.
The winner of Saturday's contest takes on the winner of the other semifinal between No. 2 Dickinson College and third-seeded Swarthmore College. The championship, hosted by the Blue Jays, will take place on Sunday at 11 a.m.
