Susquehanna Tops Gettysburg in Four

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – The Gettysburg College volleyball team suffered its first non-conference loss of the season with a 3-1 setback at the hands of Susquehanna University inside Bream Gym Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (16-2) had won its first 13 non-league bouts this season and opened with a 25-21 victory in set one, but Susquehanna (11-8) ended the streak by winning the final three sets 25-21, 25-12, and 25-19.
The Bullets held a slim advantage throughout most of the opening set until a three-point streak by the River Hawks put the score at 18-17 in favor of the visitors. Sophomore Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) accounted for four of Gettysburg's next five points with kills and senior Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added an ace to push the hosts back in front to stay.
Susquehanna steadily built momentum as it held off the Bullets in the second set before dialing in offensively in the third frame. The River Hawks hit .438 in the set and ran off 11 of the final 14 points. Gettysburg kept it close in the fourth and tied the match 11-11 on an ace by Weikert, but a four-point run by the visitors regained the lead for good.
Higgins tallied a dozen kills and freshman Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) posted 10 kills. Sophomore Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added seven kills. Weikert finished with six kills, three aces and 14 digs.
Senior Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) put up 31 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) recorded 14 digs, while classmate Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up a dozen.
Morgan Lowe led Susquehanna with 17 kills and 14 digs. Sydney Portale added 14 kills and Caroline Beohm put up 19 digs.
Gettysburg returns to its Centennial Conference schedule against Haverford College this Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bullets also play Manhattanville University at 5 p.m. Saturday.
